AquaPlanner
Development of a business calculation tool to support the Flemish aquaculture sector
AquaPlanner maps the economic potential of aquaculture in Flanders and offers entrepreneurs support on technical, economic, marketing, management, sustainability.
In Flanders the aquaculture sector has considerable growth potential to produce sustainable, local and healthy products.
Biological, process-technical, production design and economic knowledge will be integrated into a business model perspective and a calculation tool will be developed to provide insight into economically preferential business choices.
Despite a strong tradition in aquaculture research at Flemish educational and research institutions, and significant growth potential for the sector, the size of the Flemish aquaculture industry remains limited.
Aquaculture can contribute to the production of sustainable, local and healthy products such as fish, seafood, and algae.
The economic potential of aquaculture in Flanders needs to be mapped to identify opportunities for entrepreneurs and mitigate risks. Entrepreneurs should receive support in technical, economic, marketing, management, and sustainability areas. It is essential, when starting a business, to design a robust business model and to adequately capture the effects of design and process choices on business profitability.
AquaPlanner provides tools for aquaculture businesses to increase profitability through appropriate choices. Design choices, process optimization and marketing are considered in an integrated business model perspective. The case study is the cultivation of burbot (Lota lota) in recirculation systems in Flanders.
Finally, a business economic calculation tool will be developed and implemented by analogy with the business planning tool in dairy farming 'Routeplanner Melkvee'.
