Cadaver search dogs
African swine fever (ASF) is spreading across Europe and poses a serious threat to the pig industry. One of the most important measures during an outbreak of African swine fever is locating and removing wild boar carcasses in nature. During outbreaks, cadaver search teams with dogs are deployed. Our research focuses on the essential knowledge needed to successfully apply this approach in Flanders as well.
Feasibility protocol in the innovative deployment of search dogs in the field
For this assignment, we will create an overview of the relevant practical knowledge and the available literature on the use of search dogs for cadaver detection. In particular, the expertise in Germany offers valuable examples. We will do the same regarding the use of drones. Furthermore, we will evaluate the complementarity of both methods. We will draft a practical guide for establishing search dog teams in Flanders, including training, criteria, and certifications.
