KB Dur

We optimise and implement cathodic protection for the sustainable and cost-efficient repair of concrete structures. The Belgian concrete sector faces a major challenge due to the increasing ageing and deterioration of constructions, with traditional repair methods often proving insufficient. Through in-depth research, the development of a design protocol, and a practical database, we make this innovative technique accessible to everyone in the construction sector. Read on to discover how you can contribute to a more sustainable future for our concrete infrastructure through this project.

Durability of KB systems for existing concrete

Problem Statement

The Belgian concrete sector faces a major challenge: the increasing ageing and deterioration of existing structures due to "concrete decay". Traditional repair methods often provide only temporary solutions, leading to recurring damage and high long-term costs. Cathodic protection (CP) is a promising repair technique that can significantly extend the lifespan of these structures, yet its implementation in Flanders and Belgium remains limited. This is mainly due to a lack of knowledge, clear design protocols, and general scepticism about the durability of CP systems.

Objective

The KB Dur project aims to optimise and implement cathodic protection for the sustainable and cost-efficient repair of concrete structures. The goal is to increase awareness of this technique and lower the threshold for its application, enabling more infrastructure managers and contractors to adopt this innovative approach.

Methodology

Our research project addresses this issue through a two-pronged approach:

  1. Fundamental Research: We conduct in-depth studies to evaluate the durability of various CP systems. This includes practice-oriented analyses and monitoring of existing projects, as well as laboratory research into the performance of new materials and techniques.
  2. Development of Tools: Based on the research findings, we are developing a practical design protocol and a database of durable CP systems. These tools will serve as a guide for designers and contractors in the sector, equipping them with the necessary resources to make informed decisions.

Expected Output

The project will deliver the following concrete results:

  • A comprehensive design protocol usable across the sector.
  • A practical database with information on the durability and performance of CP systems.
  • Enhanced knowledge and expertise on cathodic protection among all stakeholders in the construction sector, from contractors to infrastructure managers.
  • Sustainable extension of the lifespan of Belgian concrete structures by at least 25 years, contributing to more resilient infrastructure.
