Third spaces for young teenagers in Brussels

Young people in Brussels need places where they can simply be themselves, without pressure to consume or meet expectations.

To better understand these third places for young teenagers, Odisee University of Applied Sciences and Muntpunt joined forces in a trajectory involving students, experts, and a roundtable discussion.

Where can teens in Brussels just... be?

Where can young people in Brussels go simply to… be?
A place where they don’t have to buy anything, don’t have to take part in activities, and can momentarily step away from the pressures of school or home.

These questions prompted Odisee University of Applied Sciences and Muntpunt to join forces.

Through a student assignment, a roundtable discussion, and consultations with experts, we explored what “third places” can mean for young teenagers (ages 12–14) in the city. What needs do they have? What works? And what could be improved?

We compiled the insights and recommendations into a clear and accessible report. We have already discussed it during several gatherings with professionals, policymakers, and organisations active in the Brussels field.

On 26 February 2026, we presented our final report and recommendations during a “Third Space Lab” at Muntpunt.
