"Hybridisation and community initiative in the super-diverse city": what role does social shadow work play in Brussels? Do they mainly deal with service provision and meeting people? Or do they also deal with the political mission of social work?

This project maps out the widest possible variety of faith- and belief-based organisations (FBOs) in Brussels and conducts practice-based research on how collaboration with social work organisations can be improved. In today’s post-secular society, FBOs are increasingly taking on roles in providing support and assistance to vulnerable groups who fall through the cracks of the welfare system.

In this project, we map out the widest possible variety of faith-based and philosophical organisations (FBOs) in Brussels and conduct practical research on how cooperation with social work organisations can be improved. In the post-secular society, FBOs are playing an increasingly important role in supporting and assisting vulnerable groups that fall through the cracks.

Supporting people without legal residence – especially families – presents numerous challenges for both formal and informal social work organisations, as well as for various government bodies. This research is based on six specific cases of (in)formal social work practices, in which both social workers and families without legal residence are followed over a period of one and a half years.
