Biochemical innovation (BIT-O)

The Biochemical Innovation Team at Odisee conducts applied research focused on the valorisation of biological side streams and residual materials. We support companies and organisations in transforming underutilised biomass into value‑added ingredients and products for applications in food, cosmetics and related sectors.

Our expertise lies in the biochemical and analytical characterisation of residual streams, the evaluation of processing and stabilisation strategies, and the assessment of functional properties in relevant product matrices. By combining laboratory‑scale experimentation with product‑oriented testing, we help partners identify realistic pathways for upscaling and application.

Projects are carried out in close collaboration with industrial partners and integrated with education, with a strong emphasis on feasibility, applicability and knowledge transfer. Through this practice‑oriented approach, the team supports innovation trajectories that contribute to more efficient use of raw materials and the development of economically relevant and environmentally sustainable solutions within a circular economy context.

Partner Call – Full‑Stream Valorisation of Biomass Side Streams

The Biochemical Innovation Team Odisee (BIT‑O) invites European partners to join a collaborative, applied research project focused on the full‑stream valorisation of biomass side streams, combining high‑value extract production with the downstream utilisation of post‑extraction residues. The project is developed within a CORNET‑compatible, pre‑competitive framework, targeting shared challenges faced by SMEs across the bioeconomy.

Project Focus

BIT‑O has established strong expertise in:

  • screening of biomass side streams,
  • development and optimisation of extraction processes, and
  • advanced chemical characterisation of bioactive extracts using state‑of‑the‑art analytical techniques.

The project primarily focuses on the generation and functional validation of high‑value bioactive extracts (e.g. natural antioxidants). In line with a cascade valorisation strategy, BIT‑O seeks to extend this expertise through collaboration with partners capable of further valorising the residual biomass fraction after extraction.

The post‑extraction residue, produced in substantial quantities, is rich in lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose and represents a strategic opportunity for complementary valorisation routes.

Partners We Are Looking For

BIT‑O is actively seeking European higher education institutions, research organisations and applied research centers with expertise or interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • Lignocellulosic pulp processing and characterization
  • Development of bio‑based materials, fibers, fillers or composites
  • Application of biomass residues as soil improvers or organic amendments
  • Downstream processing of biomass into non‑food bio‑based products
  • Pilot‑scale validation, material testing or agronomic evaluation

Partners are expected to complement BIT‑O’s upstream expertise with downstream knowledge and applications, enabling true full‑stream biomass valorisation.

Education and Student Mobility

In addition to research and innovation, the project places strong emphasis on education and talent development. Together with the partners, BIT‑O aims to:

  • Develop an international elective course on biomass valorisation, circular bioeconomy and applied biochemistry,
  • Implement this elective within the curricula of participating European institutions,
  • Facilitate student mobility and exchange, enabling bachelor’s and master’s students to complete internships, bachelor theses and master theses at partner locations.

Students will actively contribute to project activities such as biomass processing, extract characterisation, application testing and valorisation of post‑extraction residues, strengthening the link between education, research and industrial practice.

Why Join?

  • Be part of a European, SME‑relevant research initiative aligned with Green Deal and circular economy objectives
  • Contribute to full‑stream biomass valorisation, from extract to residual pulp
  • Access complementary expertise and shared research infrastructure
  • Strengthen long‑term international collaboration in research and education
  • Create sustainable impact beyond the project duration through joint curricula and student exchange
