CodesCool
The CodesCool project encourages Flemish primary schools to become a CodesCool. A CodesCool sets up one or more Codeklassen — small groups of 10 to 15 pupils from the 5th or 6th year who meet weekly to practise and expand their coding skills. This can take place during a lesson, at lunchtime, or just after school. Such an offer was previously non-existent in Flanders. Pupils join voluntarily. Schools can play a motivating role for pupils who, due to their socio-economic background, are excluded from other existing coding initiatives. Schools can also take an active role in promoting participation among underrepresented groups, including in terms of gender and opportunity.
Will your school become a CodesCool?
HOW DOES YOUR SCHOOL BECOME A CODESCOOL?
- Your school becomes a CodesCool by setting up one or more Codeklassen.
- A Codeklas is a group of pupils from the 5th or 6th year of primary school who work together for one hour a week on coding and programming. This can take place after school (e.g. during the lunch break) or during a scheduled lesson.
REQUIREMENTS
- There is at least one teacher or staff member who supports the Codeklas.
- Support from parents, grandparents, or other volunteers is of course welcome — think of it as a “reading buddy 2.0"!
- Each pupil in the Codeklas has access to a computer with internet connection at school. Working with tablets is currently difficult.
- Your school commits to organising a weekly one-hour Codeklas, either during a lesson, lunch break, or just after school.
- Register via this page, and we’ll get in touch.
WHO ARE WE?
CodesCool is an initiative by the Primary Education Teacher Training programme at Odisee in Aalst, together with a group of enthusiastic volunteers. Our main drive is to integrate coding into primary education in Flanders.
OUR VISION
- Participation is free for both schools and children.
- Everyone is welcome!
- CodesCools form an open network with no commercial intentions.
- Fun, exciting, and challenging!
