Psychiatric vulnerability among residents in residential care facilities

In this project, we map the profile of residents in residential care centres (RCCs) with psychiatric vulnerabilities, examine how this affects their care needs, and explore solutions to support care providers in working with this target group. The number of residents with psychiatric vulnerabilities in RCCs is increasing, leading to new challenges in care. Based on a prevalence study among residents and an assessment of care providers’ competencies, we are developing frameworks for professionalisation and support. These frameworks serve as guides for delivering high-quality care to residents with psychiatric vulnerabilities. This project is part of broader research into needs-based care in RCCs. Professionalisation and support for care providers in residential care centres in caring for residents with psychiatric vulnerabilities

Care providers report a growing number of residents with psychiatric vulnerabilities in residential care centres (RCCs). This includes not only residents with neurocognitive disorders due to dementia, but also those with depressive mood disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, personality disorders, impulse control and behavioural disorders, addiction disorders, and more. To date, there is no clear picture of the number of residents with psychiatric vulnerabilities or their specific care needs. Both care providers and recommendations from the KCE report on the organisation of mental health care for older adults in Belgium highlight the need for targeted training and specialised support for care providers working with this population.

This research project focuses on the professionalisation and support of care providers in RCCs in caring for residents with psychiatric vulnerabilities.
