Active and Healthy Ageing for All 2.0
That a healthy lifestyle contributes to healthy and happy ageing is beyond dispute. However, older adults in socially vulnerable situations do not always find their way to local organisations or programmes aimed at strengthening knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to healthy ageing. This project therefore focuses on:
- Strengthening neighbourhood engagement by identifying and raising awareness among these older adults and organisations in local communities through neighbourhood analysis;
- Aligning the current programme with the needs of these older adults;
- Offering and evaluating the programme on a large scale in local communities; and
- Sustainably embedding such programmes into the existing activities of organisations that focus on elderly care.
This project builds on the PWO project AHAA (2019-2021), in which a lifestyle programme was developed for mobile older adults in vulnerable situations, aimed at promoting active and healthy ageing. The previous AHAA project revealed that older adults in socially vulnerable situations remain largely invisible to local service centres (LDCs). It also showed that a small-scale rollout of the programme within LDCs was insufficient to evaluate its impact. Furthermore, existing local organisations for older adults expressed a need for easily implementable programmes that can be embedded into their regular activities.
Therefore, the focus of this follow-up project will be on:
- Strengthening neighbourhood engagement by identifying and reaching older adults in socially vulnerable situations within the local communities of participating LDCs, community health centres, and neighbourhood care organisations;
- Large-scale rollout and evaluation of the group programme in six centres across Brussels and Flanders; and
- Developing and offering a train-the-trainer module and interactive study day for coordinators, staff, volunteers of field partners, and students, to support integration of the programme into existing offerings. In addition to publishing the results through formal and informal channels, an informative study afternoon will be organised to share the programme’s outcomes with older adults, interested professionals, field partners and other organisations, students, and members of the public.
