Exemptions
Did you already achieve credits in a previous programme of higher education? Then you may be eligible for exemptions.
Based on your study history, we can check which exemptions you are eligible for and we can set up an Individual Study Programme (ISP).
Applying for exemptions
Application for exemption based on study certificates
You can request exemptions using previously obtained study certificates such as: diplomas, credit certificates, transcripts, certificates of training courses, …
If you believe you are entitled to an exemption for all or part of a course unit on the basis of the above-mentioned proof of studies, submit a completed application form to your learning path coach. Along with this form, for justification, you attach a file containing the previously obtained credit certificates or other proof of studies.

Deadlines
Exemptions are requested, if possible, when first enrolling in a course and no later than the specified dates below.
- Exemptions for course units beginning in the first semester must be requested by October 15 at the latest.
- Exemptions for course units of the second semester must be requested by February 25 at the latest .
The approval of exemptions will occur alongside the approval of your Individual Study Programme (ISP) at the latest.
Registering exemptions
If you think you are eligible for exemptions based on previous studies in higher education, you should discuss this with your programme’s learning path coach. Wait for the result of your application before registering the exemptions in your exemption file.
Once you know for which courses you have received an exemption, you can register them in your exemption file.
Preferably, you will register your exemptions at the start of your studies and when you are compiling your ISP at the start of the academic year.

Step 1: New application
Open the exemption application
If prompted, login with your username (r-, m- or s-number) and password (which you chose upon activation of your Associatie KU Leuven account).
Once you are successfully logged in, you can create a "new application" at the top right. Submit a new application for each course unit for which you wish to request an exemption.
Attention: do not forget to upload your complete exemption file as discussed with your study path coach.
Step 2: Submit exemption file
Once all exemptions have been requested, submit your complete file.
Please note: once you submit your file for approval, you will not be able to start any more new applications!
How are approved exemptions visible in your Individual Study Program (ISP)?
You can consult the status of your exemptions in your exemption file. Your approved exemptions are displayed in the following way in your ISP (in the tab 'Select your course units'):
- A course unit that was fully exempted is indicated by a check mark. The text 'You have an exemption for this course unit' appears when you place your cursor on this checkmark.
- A course unit that has been partially exempted is indicated by a check mark. The text 'You have a partial exemption for this course unit' appears when you place your cursor on this checkmark.
In the tab “complete your timetable” you can see for which learning activities you have received a partial exemption. You can no longer make a selection for these learning activities. You may need to make an additional choice for the learning activities for which you did not receive a partial exemption.
