MRI Safety Officer Micro-Credential
Would you like to enhance your expertise in MRI safety?
The MRI Safety Officer micro-credential combines clinical experience with educational expertise and prepares you to act safely and thoughtfully in the MRI environment.
It is suitable for imaging professionals, healthcare professionals, and anyone who works with MRI or wants to start working with it and wishes to deepen or update their knowledge of MRI safety. It also serves as a foundation for those who wish to advance to a role as an MRI Safety Officer.
The course provides insight into MRI physics and associated safety risks, covers the correct application of screening procedures, and explains, among other things, the biological effects of static magnetic fields, gradient fields, and RF fields, as well as the use of MRI-specific contrast agents.
In addition, you’ll gain a basic understanding of implant compatibility and learn how to apply safety procedures in a clinical setting.
In short, after completing this course, you’ll have a solid foundation of knowledge to work safely in an MRI environment!
Is this something for you?
The training program is designed for MRI operators (medical imaging technologists and nurses) and MRI supervisors who work in an MRI setting. Candidates must have a basic knowledge of medical imaging (a bachelor’s degree in MBRT or equivalent) and be actively involved in clinical practice or have access to a clinical setting.
Program Content
The module offers a unique combination of clinical expertise, safety-focused training, and hands-on learning, and optimally prepares participants to work safely and confidently in an MRI environment.
The module is worth 10 credits and focuses on the following topics:
- MRI hardware and the structure of the MRI environment;
- Basic principles of magnetism and the magnetic properties of matter;
- Electromagnetic fields: static fields, radiofrequency fields, and gradient fields;
- Biological effects and risks of electromagnetic fields;
- Safe use of gadolinium-based contrast agents;
- Screening of patients and staff.
What exactly will you learn?
- You will recognize and assess risks within the MRI environment
- You will apply safe work procedures in clinical situations
- You will perform proper screening of patients and staff
- You make informed decisions regarding the use of contrast agents
Blended Learning Program
The Basic MRI Safety module is part of an international training program within ECSO-MRI and is offered primarily online. This format allows participants to take the course regardless of their location and to flexibly combine it with professional and personal activities.
The program is delivered through a blended learning approach, with the ECSO-MRI self-study package forming the core of an asynchronous online learning environment.
This is supplemented by synchronous online sessions such as Q&A sessions, discussion groups, and coaching, aimed at deepening understanding and fostering interaction.
In addition, on-campus sessions are scheduled for the program’s kickoff, evaluation, and integration with clinical practice.
Lecture recordings are made available as reusable learning materials to support the learning process.
The course materials consist of online lectures, digital learning resources, and supplementary literature (primarily in English).
Evaluation
You will be evaluated based on formative assignments and self-assessment, a written exam (MCQ), and an oral assessment (scenario-based).
The program provides a certificate to participants who successfully complete the module. Those who do not take the exams will receive a certificate of participation for the classes they attended.
Where will you be after completing the program?
Graduates primarily find employment in hospitals in radiology and radiation therapy departments that use MRI machines.
The program is at EQF Level 6 and is focused on Flanders, with potential for international collaboration through the ECSO-MRI network.
You can supplement the basic module with an advanced module to prepare for an MRSO role.
Teachers
This introductory module on MRI safety is taught by experienced instructors from the medical imaging and radiation therapy programs, who possess in-depth expertise and a passion for MRI, as well as strong ties to clinical practice.
Their combined experience ensures a training program that is both substantively strong and practice-oriented!
Both instructors were actively involved in the ECSO-MRI project and contributed to the development, implementation, and quality assurance of the training program.
Gilles De Moor
As an instructor and the program coordinator for MRI within the Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy program, Gilles De Moor is also responsible for the subject matter expertise in this module. He has extensive experience in medical imaging and clinical practice in an MRI department. With his practical approach and teaching expertise, he ensures a strong link between theory and clinical application and makes complex subject matter accessible and directly applicable in the clinical context.
Anke De Bock
As project leader of the ECSO-MRI project, Anke De Bock coordinated the development of the training program, with a specific focus on safety aspects in MRI imaging. Her expertise is grounded in her previous clinical experience in various MRI departments and her role as an MRI clinical instructor. Her interest in MRI safety and her teaching expertise as a team member of the medical imaging and radiation therapy training program provide significant added value to this module.

A valuable addition to your professional development
The ECSO-MRI project (European Curriculum for Safety Officers in MRI) aimed to develop a European training program focused on MRI safety. In close collaboration with various European partners, an innovative, modular curriculum was developed to support healthcare professionals in performing MRI exams safely, effectively, and responsibly.
Among other things, the project developed a basic MRI safety module, supplemented by an in-depth advanced module for specialized roles, such as that of an MRI Safety Officer. The training program combines blended learning and e-learning with practical insights and encourages active knowledge sharing between participants and experts. In this way, competencies are strengthened with a focus on both patient safety and the protection of staff.
The project was successfully completed in the spring of 2026 and received exceptionally positive feedback from participants, instructors, and external experts. The core module developed is now being permanently integrated into our organization and offered to all employees involved in MRI activities. In doing so, we are making a targeted effort to strengthen knowledge and a sense of responsibility, and we are continuing to build a strong, widely supported safety culture within MRI departments.
